Black Faculty & Staff Affinity Group

Our Mission

The mission of the Black Faculty and Staff Affinity (BFSA) group at American University (AU) is to help foster a campus climate and culture of unity, equity and respect. The BFSA serves as an advocate and resource for advancing the academic, professional, social and cultural growth and development of Black faculty and staff through outreach, mentoring, net­ working, community service and enrichment programs.

Four Pillars

ADMIN POLICY REVIEW: Provide leadership and support to institutional leaders at AU with a comprehensive and representative perspective on institutional policies, campus cli­ mate, and programs that affect Black faculty, staff, and students.

RESOURCE & COMMUNICATION: Serve as an advocate, support system, and resource group for Black faculty and staff as we strive toward institutional goals of inclusive excellence in the AU community.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT: Promote educational and career opportunities for professional growth and upward mobility for Black faculty and staff, by providing opportunities for networking, mentoring and special enrichment programs.

COMMUNITY BUILDING: Establish and maintain activities and social spaces that con­ tribute to building community amongst Black/ African heritage staff in different university units, alumni, community groups.
